What about Yoga for back pain?

June 16th, 2009 by thedoc

I absolutely love yoga.  I think it is the best exercise for your spine, if you have a relatively health spine.  If you have herniated discs or degenerative processes going on in your spine, you must be cleared by a qualified health care provider before starting a yoga practice. In fact, if you are “out of shape”, or if you are just unsure if yoga is safe for you, please consult your family practitioner, chiropractor, physical therapist or other qualified health care provider.  Also, please do not run out and just buy a DVD and start doing yoga.  Yoga should be approached like a martial art.  Go to classes and learn proper postures that can be corrected by your certified yoga teacher.  A DVD will not correct your posture if you are doing it wrong.  This can be dangerous and also get you in to very bad habits that are hard to break once you get going.  My personal favorite type of yoga is Anusara Yoga but there are many, many different types out there.  Find the best that suits you.  I suggest you start off with a beginner’s class and don’t be shy, please inform the instructor that you are “brand new.”  They will welcome you and may do a brief health history with you to make sure that the practice is not contraindicated to your particular condition.  Most yoga studios also offer “Yoga for Special Conditions” class or “Health Back Yoga” or “Gentle Yoga” or something along those lines.  In Yoga, there is a saying, “NO PAIN, NO PAIN.”  Yoga should not hurt, ever.  If you feel pain while doing a stretch, stop, tell the instructor and then follow his/her directions.

As a chiropractor, I see doing Yoga as gaining strength.  Most people want to correct me and say, “Don’t you mean, gain flexibility.”  Well, I personally feel that flexibility is strength.  Yoga enables the body to strengthen while elongating muscles and soft tissue.  It helps with all systems of the body and prevents fixations, not just in our spine, but in other organ systems as well.  Life is motion.  Good luck and happy stretching!

How Can Chiropractic Help Headaches?

How Can Chiropractic Help Headaches?

I have found many people that suffer from headaches due to abnormal posture, repetitive stress and subluxations. I encourage all of my patients to have a medical evaluation to rule out other more serious causes for headaches, but once this is done, I have found that most people respond very quickly to chiropractic adjustments. Quite often spinal manipulation of the neck will eliminate headaches for long periods of time. I have also found that specific, postural correction spinal adjustments can give long lasting and sometimes permanent relief from headaches.

One of the most common things I see today in my office is headaches as a result of forward head posture. This is caused by long hours in from of the computer, reading or working. The normal cervical curve of the neck is vital to a healthy spine. When the head comes forward, this neck curve is reduced and quite often reversed causing many types of symptoms, especially headaches.

If you are having headaches, know that they are not a normal part of everyone’s lives. Please seek advice from your chiropractor or medical doctor to find out what is causing your headaches and correct the problem.

Back pain: Where is it coming from?

April 27th, 2009 by thedoc

Every day I see at least one patient that wants to know why they are having back pain. For many people, the answer to what is causing the back pain is obvious. At Terrapin Chiropractic, I utilize the Chiropractic Biophysics technique (CBP). Postural imbalances often are the primary reason why people are hurting. In most cases, I can trace the back pain to a repetitive stress or a sustained abnormal posture that is causing postural imbalance. When addressed using CBP, these postural imbalances can be corrected and the back pain goes away and stays gone with proper maintenance.

I take in to consideration all of the patient’s activities at home, work and socially to come up with a game plan to reduce back pain postures and give the patient the best possible chance of sustained health. Taking an in depth look at what you are doing to your spine all day long, every day can shed a great deal of light on why you are hurting.

Check out this osha website to make sure that your workstation is properly tailored to your body. If your body is molding to your environment, then you will have back pain.

Be smart, work smart and stay in proper postural balance while working, sleeping, riding in your car or resting at home.

I am always here to answer any questions about back pain and how you can reduce your chances of developing symptoms. If you are already having back pain, then let me help you eliminate it. Take care and be well.

Neck Pain: Fix it don’t just patch it.

April 27th, 2009 by thedoc

For too long the health care community has focused on symptom reduction for short term solutions. Let’s face it; everyone wants to have their neck pain eliminated ASAP. How many times have you “treated” your neck pain just to have the same neck pain return a couple weeks, days or even hours later? At Terrapin Chiropractic we fix the problem so the neck pain does not return.

As a Certified Chiropractic Biophysics doctor, I will go beyond traditional spinal adjustments to restore your optimal spinal posture, so neck pain symptoms do not return and if neck pain does return, the symptoms are greatly diminished and easily managed.

Spinal correction is possible with Chiropractic Biophysics protocols. Proper neck posture can be restored and neck pain will be eliminated. The specific biophysics spinal adjustment combined with mirror image traction and exercises literally changes posture over time.

Don’t live with neck pain that never seems to go away with temporary fixes. Find out what real spinal correction can do for your neck pain. Get checked here at Terrapin Chiropractic and improve the quality of your life.
